Ghoul, Ghost, Killer or Fiend of the Day: Anton's Right Hand in IDLE HANDS

Killer masturbation double entendres!

Idle Hands came out when I was a senior in high school and yes, I went to see it because the trailer had a lot of shots of a scantily clad Jessica Alba (who was then known to me only as 'the hot girl in Camp Nowhere who didn't have any lines.') It delivered in that crucial skimpy-Alba capacity, but let’s face it, the movie sucks.

Vivica A. Fox’s character is really, really dumb. The way Anton’s (Devon Sawa) parents were killed doesn’t gibe with the rest of the murders; it thinks it’s a lot funnier than it really is. Etc. However, the thing I was most impressed with was not Seth Green’s undead wisecracking, but Devon Sawa’s physical work as he was dragged around behind his right hand. He holds it down, hides it behind his back, bites it for being naughty, ties it to the bedpost so he can make out with a girl, and generally gesticulates all over the place. It's not as if the performance was in league with our great physical comedians, but I came away from that film thinking that Devon Sawa might turn out to be someone to watch. For me, this had been two interesting performances in a row (the other being his LSD meltdown in SLC Punk.) Unfortunately, he hasn’t done anything at all worth it since.
