Shoot ‘em Up gleefully buries good taste and subtlety beneath a mountain of bodies. Each setpiece is somehow more gloriously over-the-top than the last.
This movie felt like it was based on some crazy Manga or something. I'm all for over the top, but when the carrot went through the head I didn't think I was going to like it and I didn't really.
I definitely think you have to be in a certain mood for this and I was not in that certain mood.
I agree with you for the most part. The enjoyment of the film for me was based on embracing its central conceit, then monitoring whether or not each set-piece was successful on its own terms. If you are not fully prepared to be submerged into a comic book universe lacking in narrative logic but making up for it in creative mayhem, you will not enjoy this film.
Shoot the Projectionist is Eddie Hardy. He used to sing in bands in Oakland; write record and movie reviews in New York; and host a podcast in Portland, where he still lives and writes.
